Biomolecules which help in identifying the normal as well as abnormal changes occurring in our body and may indicate the onset or the presence of certain diseases. Our body contains certain biomolecules like proteins, hormones, DNA or genes which serve as biomarkers as they indicate the health status of our body and its functions. Most of these biomarkers are found to be proteins.
Cancer biomarkers are certain substances which are produced either by cancer cells or by nearby cells of the body in response to cancer or certain benign tumor cells. Every type of cancer has not been identified with tumor markers. These cancer biomarkers are produced by cancer cells as well as normal cells which can be found in the blood, urine, stool, tumor tissue or other bodily fluids. Recently gene expression patterns, and changes in DNA has begun to be used as cancer biomarkers where as many other different biomarkers have also been identified and are presently under clinical trials. Among these biomarkers, one biomarker is found to be associated with either one type of cancer or more than one type of cancer but there is no such biomarker as universal biomarker for all cancers. These biomarkers help to detect and diagnose cancer along with other diagnostic methods used in combination. These are also used to plan proper treatment and also during cancer therapy. If levels of these tumor markers are found to decrease or getting down to normal range.
